Planning 2011: Kiva Challenge, and Post-Grad-Rehab

This time last year, I made a list of what I wanted to happen in 2010. The goals I set were helpful and I met (or nearly met) most of them but next year everything is changing – I don’t know what goals I should be setting. How do I set professional goals for a job I’ve yet to start? Do I need to set personal fitness goals – because that just seems to fall in to place when I have structure.

I think instead I’m going to have two different themes. The first is giving back – Girl Geek Dinners KW is on the agenda, as is an Awesome Foundation KW. As part of that, I’m planning something that I’m calling The Kiva Challenge. The second theme is about reclaiming my life after Grad School. I’m calling that Post Grad Rehab.

    The Kiva Challenge

I’ve been making loans on Kiva for a while, and it’s got to the point where I’ve been making 1-3 loans a month just out of repaid funds, which is pretty cool. Now I have a real job, I want to do more. That’s what the Kiva challenge is about – it’s a X number of new loans every month. I’m choosing 4, so $100 new dollars a month loaned on Kiva so I’ll then be making 5-7 loans a month. Over the year, that will be $1200 more in the system.

    Post Grad Rehab

Last week, I read The Happiness Project (Amazon). I was skeptical, because what does a wealthy white New York woman with her 2.4 children have to say about finding happiness? I still don’t know about that – but I did enjoy the book. What I am getting from it, though, is that if you want to change, you have to start now. The idea that in the future we’ll be skinnier, or happier, or more successful, is nothing unless we start working on it today.

Because graduation is close, I’ve been thinking – when I graduate, I’ll do this. I’ll be able to afford to do this. I’ll have time to do this. It’s clear how much of living I’ve put on hold for the sake of grad school. Well, grad school is done. It’s time for real life. I don’t know if this is my own happiness project, I see it more as taking time to reclaim my life. My themes are different. So far, I have:

    • Work – what are my professional goals, and how do I achieve them? How do I maximize my effectiveness? How do I navigate the company?
    • Relax – do things just because. Read novels. Watch TV. Just be.
    • Feel beautiful – go shopping and buy nice clothes. Have a mudwrap and a facial because I want to, not because I think I’m having a nervous breakdown.
    • Explore my local area – weekend mini-breaks! Hiking!
    • Create – set time aside to work on those artsy projects that I’ve been wanting to do.
    • Write – set time aside for ebook projects. Work on writing better, more concisely.
    • Culture – go to the theatre, the museum. Watch “classic” movies and read “classic” books.
    • Try the unexpected – take a cookery class. Drink coffee. Learn to make a mean martini.
    • Be ridiculous – dress more Harajuku. Experiment with color. Watch children’s movies.
    • Physical challenge – maybe running?

Any suggestions? The first three probably map to January/February/March but thereafter I’m undecided. I might combine, replace, and I’ll need at least two more themes. But at the end of it hopefully I’ll feel like I’m back to living, not putting my life on hold.

    September

I feel like September went by in a complete blur. I’ve been jittering about and haven’t actually spent 7 days straight in Ottawa since the start of August – exhausting! The highlight was definitely going to my first Grace Hopper celebration.

    Get a Great Job

Have rented a beautiful loft in Kitchener, two blocks from the new office. Moving at the end of October! Yay!

    Get a Paper Published

Met with co-supervisor, but no real progress in September – too much rushing about. Moving back to weekly goals this week, and am finally back in my office with a stack of papers to read!

    Graduate

    As above.

    Create More Stuff

Not much success at that in September! Too stressed with everything else that is going on.

    Be in Better Shape

Noticeably better. Working out with my trainer a lot for my last month in Ottawa and then switching to LA Fitness when I get to Kitchener, also have a recommendation for hot yoga. Need to find kickboxing and pole dancing classes.

    Be More Balanced

This past month has been insane – crazy highs and rough lows. I need to go back to being on a more even keel emotionally and make progress. And less rushing about and more progress on graduation! It’s hard because I’m so excited about my next adventure I just want to be done already!

Make More Time for my Boyfriend

I have to write separately about this, but I’m feeling Jenny Blake’s open letter to love.

    Random Aspirations

    • Go somewhere new – looks like I won’t be able to make it to India because of things happening in December, but I totally think Grace Hopper counts as my somewhere new this year! Was the most awesome 3 days!
  • March-August

I started doing the month in review thing and only did it for 2 months before things went a bit nuts/fell apart and I gave myself a break from high-level goals to focus on putting stuff back together. However, now the summer is over it seems like a good time to restart!

    Get a Great Job

Check. Starting January. Now need to find somewhere to live.

    Get a Paper Published

Not quite there. Plan is to create journal paper with previous work and work that completes it. Have also rethought my direction over the summer so this will have a different focus.

    Graduate

Needs to happen by January. Courses all done, will write thesis and then journal paper, or vice versa.

    Create More Stuff

Been working on visualizations for Caitlin’s thesis (Future of Newspaper posts) – really enjoying that. Have some other ideas that I’d like to get to – hopefully in the fall.

    Be in Better Shape

Not where I want to be (as ever) but got back into working out over the summer and I’m much fitter than I was at the start of the year. Will be working out with trainer 3x a week when I get back to Canada, and will try and kickbox 2-3 times a week as well. Also, tried poledancing which was fun, so might take another session of that too.

    Be More Balanced

I don’t know really how I’ve done at this, but I have had an imbalance that I’m happier with at least!

Make More Time for my Boyfriend

We broke up so this is now moot. Abandoned being a “better girlfriend” and have since started experimenting with dating someone who doesn’t make me feel so crushingly inadequate.

    Random Aspirations

    • Be More Awesome
    • Write an e-book – talked about with mentor, we have an idea, just need to make time to work on it.
    • Go somewhere new – if things work out, looking at December in India doing yoga
    • Do things that scare me – interviewed at Google, moving to Waterloo!
    • Do something awesome – making Awesome Ottawa happen, now CompSci woman, Extreme Blue.
    • Take every opportunity
    • Learn, every day
  • February

    Overall

Really good. Feel like I’m making good progress on all my goals! Yay!

    Get a Great Job

    So far:

    • Waiting for updated resume to come back.
    • Got offered IBM Extreme Blue Internship! Yay!

    Next:

    • Finalize resume
    • Send to people who’ve shown an interest
    • Fill in paperwork and get work visa for internship
    • Be a great intern.

    Get a Paper Published

    • Paper submitted, just waiting to hear back.
    • Outline for next paper in head, deadline coming next week I may go for

    Graduate

    Still to do:

    • Finish course requirement (4/5 done)
    • Complete seminar requirement
    • Submit two papers
    • Write up into thesis

    Create More Stuff

I’m not doing great at this, but I’m okay with that at the moment. I have ideas that I’m excited about, and once I’m done school… I’ll be able to work on them. I went to a Team Camp event, so even if I’m not creating much myself I’m at least helping other people create!

    Be in Better Shape

    • I kickboxed 3 times last week! Yay! Joined the gym again, so trying to balance. But I’m working out a lot more, and I’m in much fitter physically, so that’s great.
    • Ski instructing is going pretty well, I’ve been teaching fewer small children – which is awesome.
    • Cross-country ski – need to go again – the weather has not been great for this.
    • I should go swimming more – try to increase this.

    Be More Balanced

    • End my week on Friday, so I don’t frantically try and complete things over the weekend. – still finding this really helpful.
    • I’m working less in the evenings, mostly because I’m getting up earlier. But I’m balancing better, if I work in the evening, it’s mostly because I want to, or I took time off in the day to work out. That’s OK!

Make More Time for my Boyfriend

    • We’re doing much better and hanging out more. We just started watching My Family.
  • January

    Overall

How’s this month been? I’ve made progress on my work, but not as much as I want to. I’m doing more exercise, but not as much as I want to. In all, I guess things are going okay. Not great, but not bad either. Everything is still possible. For February, I think it’s just a case of keep going, ramp up where possible.

    Get a Great Job

    So far:

    • Get an appointment at the careers service to go over my CV – decided to get my CV written by Maureen McCann at MyPromotion. Currently have first draft.
    • Send it out to tech people I know and respect and ask for feedback – have some feedback, waiting for more
    • Ask people I’ve worked with to recommend me on LinkedIn (if they’re comfortable with that)
    • Ask people for recommendations for companies to apply to, and referrals where possible (already started on this)

    Next:

    • Finalize resume
    • Send to people who’ve shown an interest

    Get a Paper Published

    • Meet with supervisors to talk about what I have so far – Friday
    • Incorporate suggestions
    • Submit paper, and hope it gets accepted

    Graduate

    • Determine how much more work I need to do.
    • Do it.

    Create More Stuff

    • Get together with other people, Processing Jam next week is a good start – was fun! Need to schedule another
    • Make time for the things that are would-like-to rather than must do – not doing great at this.

    Be in Better Shape

    • Go back to kickboxing
    • Work up to 3 times a week – at 2 plus gym twice. OK.
    • Organize transport, and take ski instructor job
    • Cross-country ski – need to go again
    • On days I haven’t exercised, force myself to put on my swimsuit and walk to the pool before I go to bed (inspired by this post by Penelope Trunk) – failing miserably at this

    Be More Balanced

    • End my week on Friday, so I don’t frantically try and complete things over the weekend. – finding this really helpful.
    • Ski at least one day at the weekend (during the season) – Going OK! Missed one.
    • No working after dinner, use that time to stay current (blogs, twitter), exercise, play wii fit, spend time with friends, or relax. – liking this. Have ended up working maybe once in the evening, not much.

Make More Time for my Boyfriend

    • Regular date night – can’t seem to coordinate schedule for this, but we are trying to spend an evening one day a week together
    • Watch movies that he wants to see – watched The Royal Tenenbaums, enjoyed it.
    • Hug him more – keep at this.
